Invest Europe guided the industry through the first round of pan-European regulation
European private equity became a regulated asset class in July 2013, with the implementation of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) and the European Venture Capital Funds Regulation (EuVECA), a voluntary alternative to AIFMD for smaller funds.
Thanks to Invest Europe’s strategy of positive and constructive engagement with European policymakers, the industry currently has a workable AIFMD regime with a marketing passport and real potential as a mark of quality.
Since the European Commission put forward an agenda to develop a Capital Markets Union (CMU) in 2015, Invest Europe has been closely collaborating with the European institutions to ensure existing rules are improved and allow fund managers to market their funds across EU borders without being subject to unjustified barriers.
Invest Europe’s efforts also led to a helpful review of the EuVECA voluntary passport and to the launch of public-private venture capital fund-of-funds, initiatives that have the potential to contribute to the growth of the venture capital and mid-market industry.
Invest Europe also sought to ensure that existing regulations do not disicentivise investors to commit capital to the asset class. Lower risk-weights for private equity and venture capital as well as for infrastructure under the Solvency II framework are good examples of this.
Invest Europe has been the guardian of the Europeanprivate equity industry’s professional standards for 30 years, and as such we are always pushing advances in best practice in fields including fund and portfolio management, investor reporting and responsible investment.
The Invest Europe Handbook of Professional Standards first launched in 2012 marked the agreement of both private equity managers and their investors (limited partners) to follow a shared code of conduct.
The Handbook has subsequently been regularly updated to ensure its relevance. We are currently working on the 2017 update to reflct current market practice and expected focus issues for policymakers, in turn influencing debate and outcomes for the private equity industry.
Bringing together industry players
Private equity is at the heart of the global debate about how best to deliver long-term, sustainable investment into companies and the wider economy. Invest Europe makes the most of its unique position as the world's largest private equity association by connecting the industry and policymakers to debate how they could work together to encourage long-term investment throught a comprehensive suite of conferences and events focused on delivering unparalleled industry insight, debate and networking opportunities.
Invest Week, a series of events focused on the role of investment in the European economy, was held for the first time in Brussels in 2016. Invest Week is bringing together policymakers, investors and entrepreneurs from around the world in the politically important discussion about driving investment into European companies covering every aspect of the investment landscape.
European Data Cooperative (EDC)
The European Data Cooperative (EDC) is a joint initiative developed by Invest Europe and its national association partners to collect Europe-wide industry activity on fundraising, investments and divestments.
Using one platform with a standardised methodology allows us to have consistent, robust pan-European statistics that are comparable across the region. As a result we produce the most trusted and comprehensive overview of Europe’s private equity and venture capital markets available.
