Michael Collins becomes Chief Executive of Invest Europe1 October 2016
Today Michael Collins assumes the role of Chief Executive of Invest Europe and will lead the world’s largest private equity and venture capital association through the next stage of its development.
Michael succeeds Dörte Höppner, who has moved on after five years at the helm of Invest Europe - formerly the European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (EVCA). Joining the trade association in 2013 as Public Affairs Director, Michael was promoted to Deputy Chief Executive in 2015. As Chief Executive, he will guide the industry through the upcoming review of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD), as well as directing Invest Europe’s work in sourcing comprehensive industry data, promoting the European private equity industry worldwide and upholding the highest professional standards for its members.
“Invest Europe is a respected and authoritative voice for the private equity industry among investors and policymakers, and I am delighted to be taking over as its Chief Executive,” said Michael. “The work that our members do to support the growth of 5,000 European businesses each year and provide investment returns that help pensioners and savers is vital. I look forward to playing my part in championing their efforts.”
Michael’s priorities as he steps into the role of Invest Europe’s Chief Executive encompass an extensive programme of activities and events. They include Invest Week, a series of events in Brussels this November focused on the European investment and growth agenda, which Invest Europe is spearheading in conjunction with EU policy-focused organisations and policymakers.
In December, Michael will lead an Invest Europe delegation of members to Seoul and Tokyo, where they will deliver practical insight to local investors about Europe’s most attractive investment opportunities within the private equity landscape.
Policymaker briefings and responsible investment initiatives are also in the works, including a guide to infrastructure fund investment, an update of Invest Europe’s Professional Standards Handbook and a new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) due diligence questionnaire for members to facilitate best practice.
“Michael’s skills and experience in both the public and private sectors equip him well to lead Invest Europe and guide its member firms through today’s evolving regulatory and political landscape and to highlight the important role played by the private equity and venture capital industry in stimulating business innovation, growth and efficiency in the European economy and creating long term value for investors and pensioners,” said Gerry Murphy, Invest Europe Chairman and Chairman of Blackstone Group International Partners LLP.
Prior to joining Invest Europe, Michael was Managing Director for European Government Affairs at Citigroup. His more than ten years of Brussels experience also includes four years as Financial Counsellor at the UK Permanent Representation to the EU. In this role he led a team responsible for macroeconomic, taxation and fiscal policy, as well as financial services regulation, which included negotiations on the creation of AIFMD. Michael holds a first class degree from Wadham College, Oxford.
Established in 1983, Invest Europe is a non-profit association based in Brussels with 650 members, representing European private equity, venture capital and infrastructure funds, as well as their global investors.
