As individuals, businesses and governments address the issue of sustainability globally, the consideration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) opportunities and risks not only drives the creation of better companies, but also helps safeguard long-term performance and value for investors in those companies.
In this environment, responsible investment has become a critical issue for private equity fund managers and their investors. ESG factors play an important role in their initial investment decisions, as well as the on-going development of companies after investment.
As the pan-European association for the private equity industry, Invest Europe has done a great deal to promote and increase members’ awareness, and to facilitate the integration of responsible investment and ESG issues. Together with like-minded associations across the EU and around the world, we will continue to bolster this important cause by highlighting best practice and disseminating guidance through the publication of guides and other materials, the development of training courses and the organisation of workshops and other events.
This voluntary best practice guide aims to help private equity firms identify and address material ESG risks and opportunities, both prior to investment and during the ownership period. It also includes a comprehensive questionnaire covering a wide range of ESG issues.
The Invest Europe Climate Change Guide constitutes one of the most complete guides on ESG issues, and in particular climate change, for private equity investors to date. It includes tailored guidance, practical tools and concrete business cases made by practitioners for practitioners. Its structure follows a step-by-step approach and is based on three different modules – Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced - covering all stages of investors’ ESG journey.
