How industrial players, startups and venture capital can collaborate to drive technological innovation.
“The open innovation cycle of startups collaborating with large industrial players, fuelled by venture capital, is something that has been proven over the last decades on a global level as being the driver of economic growth and defending and growing prosperity in all regions.”
I would say that this open Innovation cycle of startups collaborating with large industrial players and fueled by venture capital as an important ingredient is something that has been proven over the last decades on a global level.
I'm Robert Gallenberger, I'm a founding partner at Matterwave Ventures. We are an early-stage venture firm focusing on investing in the future of European industry. We want to bring the industrial sector into the future by gaining sustainability, gaining technology sovereignty—so being less dependent on other continents for supply chains and access to fundamental technologies—and also further push digitization and automation in order to increase output per labor on the European continent.
I'm a mechanical engineer with a focus on production, and I started my career in the automotive industry. I'm, of course, very convinced about the competitive power of technological innovation. I would say that this open innovation cycle of startups collaborating with large industrial players and fueled by venture capital as an important ingredient is something that has been proven over the last decades on a global level as being the driver of economic growth and of really defending and growing prosperity in all regions that have adopted that model.
I think we were on a very good track in Europe, and we've proven the same model also in Europe, but we're not pouring enough of our private wealth into that cycle in order to defend and further grow our prosperity. We're actually exporting still a lot of our private wealth and capital into other continents, primarily the US, because we think venture capital has been invented there and only works there. But the facts tell a totally different story, and we need to urgently reverse that trend and mobilize more private capital for that Innovation cycle in Europe.
