Wilson Therapeutics was founded to find and develop a treatment for Wilson’s Disease, a rare inherited condition characterised by excess build-up of copper in the body, which can lead to liver and brain damage and ultimately prove fatal. Venture capital investment from Health Cap helped establish Wilson Therapeutics and enabled it to acquire Decuprate, a promising copper protein binding agent, from Tactic Pharma1. Subsequent VC funding helped advance the product through clinical trials at an accelerated pace.
After successful initial testing, Wilson Therapeutics listed on the Nasdaq Stockholm at a valuation of SEK1.3 billion2, raising SEK436 million for further development3. While in Phase III clinical trials in 2018, Alexion, the rare disease unit of AstraZeneca, bought the company for $855 million in cash. The purchase price represented a significant premium to Wilson Therapeutics share price and provided a return in excess of 10x for its venture capital investors.
